Post-surgical rehabilitation
Physiotherapy to support recovery after surgery — from orthopaedic procedures to abdominal and cardiac recovery.
Post-surgical rehabilitation in plain language
After surgery, your body has work to do — restoring movement, rebuilding strength, and getting comfortable using the area again. Good physiotherapy is patient with that process and timed carefully against your surgeon’s post-operative guidance.
How we approach post-surgical recovery
- Early gentle movement where it’s appropriate and your surgeon has cleared it.
- Aquatic therapy is often valuable in early recovery — the buoyancy reduces joint load, and the warm water helps with stiffness and swelling.
- Progressive land-based work as you regain capacity.
- A return-to-activity plan for the things you want to be doing again.
Common procedures we support
- Knee — total knee replacement, ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair
- Hip — total hip replacement, hip arthroscopy
- Shoulder — rotator cuff repair, shoulder replacement
- Spine — discectomy, fusion, decompression
- Abdominal and cardiac surgery (with appropriate clearance)
Working with your surgeon
Many surgeons send their patients with specific post-operative protocols. We follow those closely. If you don’t have a protocol, we’ll work with what your surgeon has indicated and can liaise with their rooms if useful (with your consent).
A note
Your surgeon’s clinical guidance comes first. We will not run ahead of it — and if anything in your recovery feels wrong or worsens, please contact your surgeon’s rooms or your doctor.
