Sports and overuse injuries

This page covers the cluster of injuries that come with movement and training — sprains, strains, tendonitis, bursitis, and the overuse problems that show up after a build-up of load. The principles are similar across them.

Common patterns

  • Sprains and strains — soft-tissue injuries to ligaments and muscles.
  • Tendonitis / tendinopathy — irritated or overloaded tendons (Achilles, patellar, rotator cuff, elbow).
  • Bursitis — inflamed fluid sacs around joints.
  • Orthopaedic injuries — broader soft-tissue and joint issues that come from sport or activity.

How we approach them

  1. Find what’s actually irritated. Often the painful tissue is downstream of a movement pattern or load issue further up the chain.
  2. Settle the irritation. Manual therapy, soft-tissue work, load management.
  3. Build back capacity. Progressive loading is what restores tendon and muscle health long-term.
  4. Return to your sport. A clear plan from “I can do this without pain” to “I can do this at training intensity.”

A note on returning to sport

We will give you an honest read on what your tissue is ready for. We will not push you faster than the evidence supports and we will not pretend an injury is fully resolved when it isn’t.

When to consult your doctor

For sudden severe injuries (a popping sound at injury, immediate severe swelling, inability to bear weight, deformity), please see your doctor or an orthopaedic specialist first.
